Veteran’s Day tomorrow!

November 10, 2015

IMG_4586

Tomorrow, Wednesday, November 11th, the Veteran’s Day Parade will be held on Central Avenue at 11:00am.  However, the preparations for the parade will be beginning much earlier and the staging will be held in the parking lot of the North Phoenix Baptist Church.

The Uptown Wednesday Market will still be held tomorrow during the usual hours of 8:00am to 1:00pm; however, to accommodate the parade preparations, the market will be moved to the northeast section of the parking lot, where it is normally held on Saturdays.  Central Road will be closed off at Bethany Home Road; although east-west traffic will still be able to drive along Bethany Home Road.  The market will be accessible from the Bethany Home Road entrance.

We hope to see you tomorrow and while you are in the area make sure to check out the parade and honor the veterans who have served!

Sweet Corn

McClendon’s Select will be back at the Scottsdale Old Town Famers’ Market tomorrow from 8:00am to 1:00pm and will be bringing the first of our fall sweet corn.  The corn is so sweet and delicious.  We are excited to be able to harvest it earlier than expected.  Make sure to get to the market early, sweet corn never lasts long.

Scottsdale Markets, Butterkins and the “Sisterhood of the Stove”…

McClendon’s Select is gearing up for our first Saturday market of the season tomorrow at the Old Town Farmers’ Market. We are pleased to be bringing with us Butterkin, a new variety of winter squash that is a cross between a Sugar Pie Pumpkin and a Butternut squash. Intensely orange in color this is hands down the best winter squash that I have ever tasted.

Butterkin provides the perfect blend of sweet and buttery flavors and will make a flavorful addition to soups, pastas, pies, and salads. Its creamy and smooth texture makes it extremely versatile. We roasted a Butterkin this weekend and it was the perfect start to fall.

We are also happy to announce that the “Sisterhood of the Stove”event is being held for its second year on Sunday, October 25th from 1:00-4:00pm. This amazing meal is an all-women chef event with some of the best from around the Valley. The event will be held outdoors at the Cattletrack Compound in Scottsdale featuring dishes from Chrysa Robertson, Charleen Badman, Tracy Dempsey, Lori Hashimoto, Helen Yung, and Eugenia Theodosopoulos, to name a few. The price is $100/per person inclusive, with some wonderful Arizona beer and wines for pairing. To make reservations, contact Sabrina at ranchopinot@hotmail.com. Last year’s event was such a success, I am glad to hear that they are doing this again!

See you tomorrow Scottsdale – rain or shine we will be there!

Organic White Sonora Wheat – and we are coming back to Scottsdale…

October 13, 2015

IMG_4768

Heirloom grains have been getting quite the resurgence in popularity. One of the leading grains making a come back is White Sonora Wheat. This grain has a rich history here in Arizona and is one of the oldest surviving wheat varieties anywhere in North America. It was first Introduced in the early 1700s by Jesuit Father Eusebio Francisco Kino to the Sonoran region of Mexico and Southern Arizona. White Sonora Wheat was the staple wheat for the western United States for almost 200 years, from the early 1700s to the 1900s. Starting in the early 1800s, California planted Sonoran Wheat almost exclusively. This wheat was actually Arizona’s first export crop. Sonora Wheat berries have been added to Slow Foods Ark of Taste. The Ark of Taste preserves delicious and distinctive foods facing extinction.

We are excited to announce that we have partnered with Noble Granary to now be able to introduce White Sonora Wheat the way it was traditionally grown – without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers. Our White Sonoran Wheat berries are USDA Certified Organic and Arizona Grown. McClendon’s Select is proud to be able to play a role in re-introducing White Sonora Wheat to consumers and in increasing sustainable food production in Arizona. These wheat berries are cleaned twice to help guarantee uniform size and to make sure the grain is free of burrs, wheat chaff and other foreign materials. The grading on this grain is best that you can get.

White Sonora Wheat is a versatile whole grain, full of vitamins and fiber, with a sweet, nutty taste and a delightful chewy texture. This grain is very flexible, it can be used in beer production, milled to make breads and tortillas, or boiled and used for a grain salad for example. They can take a fair amount of time to cook (up to 50 minutes or more). These grains even work well if you toast them prior to cooking on the stove top for a deeper nuttier flavor.  We will have this White Sonora Wheat available this week at the Uptown Market on Wednesday, and we will be back in Scottsdale at the Old Town Farmers Market on Saturday morning.

As well, Noble Breads will be with us at both markets this week and they will be bringing a Spent Grain Loaf, as well as a selection of their new pastries which they previewed last week.  These pastries use the same ingredients as their breads.  Tomorrow’s selection will include orange sesame loaf, lemon poppy, coffee cake, blue berry muffins, chocolate chunk scones and a variety of cookies, including an amazing Valhrona chocolate chip which I got to try last week.  These are not to be missed.  I think Aidan did his best to eat them all last week while on fall break.  Good news – he is back in school so you have a chance to try them for yourself.

We are excited to be back in Scottsdale on Saturday.  See you at the markets!

Uptown Wednesdays starting next week…

McClendon’s Select is getting ready to return to the Uptown Wednesday market next week on October 7th.  We have a huge selection of beautiful produce ready for harvest at both of our farms.  And, we have a new batch of market totes that we just received that are bigger and roomier than our previous tote bags with sturdy rope handles, but will still be available for just $7.

These bags are made in India from a non-profit business that supplies microloans to women-owned businesses in developing countries.  These bags are lead free, fair-trade compliant, and made from 100% organic cotton.  I love that the bags are helping empower women while also helping save the planet from more plastic bags.  Make sure to get your bags soon, as we tend to sell out of our market totes pretty quickly.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone next week at the Uptown Wednesday market and we will be back in Scottsdale on Saturdays starting October 17th.

Fall Markets coming up!

September 17, 2015

McClendon's Select

McClendon’s Select has been feverishly planting getting ready for the fall market season.  Every day for the next two months we have all sorts of seedlings going into the ground to get us started at the markets and to carry us through until winter planting. (Fall sweet corn will be making a return this November!) And as the weather finally starts to dip below triple digits, we are excited to get ready to return to the markets. McClendon’s Select will be returning to the Uptown Market at Bethany Home Road and Central on Wednesday, October 7th and will then start back at the Old Town Scottsdale Farmers’ Market on Saturday, October 17th.

But, the good news is that you don’t have to wait that long to start stocking up on organic produce from our farm.  Please look for John at Uptown this Saturday, he will have beautiful summer squash, okra, Armenian cucumbers, arugula and baby mixed greens and baby spinach from the farm.  As well, organic apple season has begun and you can get the first of the season apples starting this Saturday.

As well, we would like to help out our friends at Southern Rail.  Chef Justin Beckett has created a beautiful “farm to bagel” locally inspired breakfast item for the Thomas Hometown Breakfast Battle using seasonal, organic produce from our farm.  Chef Beckett is all about supporting local and wants to help promote Arizona’s farm community nationally.  This bagel looks as delicious as it does beautiful and you can also find the recipe on the voting site.  You can vote once a day at http://tinyurl.com/VoteBeckett.  Voters also have the chance to personally win $10,000.  Give a little voting support to Chef Beckett and his team at Southern Rail!

We can’t wait to see everyone again at the farmers’ markets!!

Saturdays in the summer…

July 10, 2015

IMG_6966

For the first time during a summer McClendon’s Select produce will be available at a farmers’ market. John’s Amish Country has been selling our organic produce at the Saturday Uptown markets. During the summer months, the Uptown Market has moved indoors at the North Phoenix Baptist Church off of Central and Bethany Home Road. We are thrilled to be able to continue providing produce to the market during the summer months. Thanks to our partnership with the Cancer Treatment Centers of America and the land we are farming at their site, we have a larger offering now during the summer months than we had previously.

John’s Amish Country has been bringing produce from our farm to the Uptown Saturday markets this past year and has done a lovely job of working with customers. Tomorrow at the market he will have with him a beautiful assortment of heirloom tomatoes, okra, summer squash, cucumbers and beautiful fresh greens, among other summer goodies from the farm.  We are delighted to still be able to provide produce during the summer and hope that you are able to stop by and see John and the other vendors.  The market will be open from 8:00am to noon.

We hope you are having a wonderful summer!

Last market of the season…

Tomorrow is the last farmers’ market of the season for McClendon’s Select.  We will be at the Uptown Wednesday tomorrow from 8:00am to noon with all sorts of beautiful heirloom tomatoes.  The beauty above was picked yesterday and weighed in a three pounds.  (And was… delicious!)  We will also have fresh organic corn that is being harvested as I type, and organic mini watermelons called “Solitaire” that are a beautiful bright red inside and so sweet and refreshing.

During the rest of the summer John’s Amish Country will be selling McClendon’s Select produce at the Uptown Saturday farmers’ market.  For our Scottsdale customers who are unfamiliar, the market is located at the North Phoenix Baptist Church, on the southeast corner off of Central and Bethany Home Roads.  The Saturday market is open from 8:00am to noon and will be moved indoors this summer so you may enjoy the air conditioning while you shop.  John’s Amish Country will have a selection of fresh produce from our farm throughout the rest of the summer.

McClendon’s Select will be back at the Uptown Wednesday market the first Wednesday of October.  We want to thank all of our customers for your continued support of our farm.  We are truly grateful to get to do what we do and we have the best customers who help make that possible!  We hope that you have a wonderful summer.  Stay cool… we will see you in the fall!

Two more left….

June 16, 2015

Next Wednesday, June 24th, is the last Uptown Farmers’ Market for McClendon’s Select and for the rest of the Wednesday vendors for the season. The market will continue to run thru the summer indoors (with air conditioning!) on Saturdays. And, for the first time during the summer, you will be able to find McClendon’s Select produce at the Saturday Uptown market from John’s Amish Country.

So, with just two markets left in the season, come out early tomorrow for the wonderful sweet corn and the first of the field grown heirloom tomatoes that are coming off of the vine.  These are two of my summer favorites and their flavors are incredible.  We will be open from 8:00am to noon.  If you have insulated bags or an ice chest in your car you may want to bring them, they will keep your produce fresher.  See you at Uptown!IMG_4828
